About Chris Levinson Photography

I’m a photographer and drone pilot based in Newcastle, NSW. I specialise in food and portraits and have a passion for landscape photography in my spare time.

My Story

I grew up shooting with film and polaroid cameras so photography has been a part of my life for about as long as I can remember.

But my journey really began in 2011 when I bought my first SLR, a Canon 600D. Originally I’d purchased it to make short videos but instead it made me want to take more photos and my photography grew from there.

During that first year I taught myself the basics by reading every book on photography I could find and watching countless tutorials on YouTube. Then I’d go on photowalks around Sydney to put it all into practice.

A year later I began taking on my first professional shoots and then, after moving to Newcastle in 2013, I started exploring the area’s beautiful beaches and fell in love with landscape photography as well.

Early on my professional work focused on portraits, family sessions and live music. But when the COVID lockdowns hit in 2020 I began helping restaurants move their menus online, photographing their dishes so customers could see what they were ordering. Getting their menus online helped many of them to survive the lockdowns and, while my role was small, it was very rewarding.

I also found that I genuinely enjoyed food photography and from there it quickly became a large part of my professional work. Now it’s a core part of what I do and it’s allowed me to explore photography and storytelling in entirely new ways.

My Approach

Photography, to me, is about connection — between people, places, and the stories they tell. That’s what I try to capture in all of my work. Whether it’s a chef’s new creation, a family sharing a candid moment, or a beautiful sunset, my goal is to capture imagery that feels honest and genuine.

I also believe in authenticity. I don’t use AI in my work beyond basic editing tools and I don’t edit images in ways that distort reality — like Photoshopping people to look thinner or removing natural features in a landscape. Authenticity is important to me, especially in an age where digital manipulation is everywhere.

My Pastimes

When I’m not working you’ll often find me photographing the beautiful landscapes around the Hunter. Landscape photography has become one of my greatest passions and I love nothing more than capturing a stunning sunset or the Milky Way with my camera. My landscape work has been featured at the MAC Gallery in Lake Macquarie and I showcase my favourite images here on my site.

I also run the Newcastle & Lake Macquarie Photography Group on Facebook, where we host photowalks, workshops, and fun community events. The focus is on learning by getting out, shooting together and having fun and I love seeing other people discovering the same excitement that first drew me to photography as well.

I also volunteer with several animal rescues, photographing cats and dogs looking for their forever homes. It’s very rewarding and led me to adopting my cat, Tira, after I photographed her in 2022.

When I’m not photographing you’ll usually find me experimenting in the kitchen, getting lost in a good book, or putting together a new LEGO kit. I also write poetry and fiction — my first story was published when I was 16 and I’m currently working on a novel. All of these often feed back into my photography too.

Let’s Work Together

My favourite part of the job is collaborating with restaurants, brands, and families to create images that feel genuine and authentic.

Whether it’s capturing your dishes, your people, or your place in the world, my goal is to photograph it in a way that feels true to you and your vision.

If you’d like to work together, please get in touch — let’s create something meaningful together, and have a bit of fun along the way.
